communion.

yes, yes, yes!

it is the thing that is strengthening "reality tv" and anything interactive on the net. sadly, these offer a sense of false, impersonal community.it is only theatre that invites you into a room to feel other people feeling right along with you, as a story is being shared.

the only things i liked about catholic mass were the real parts, the human parts - shaking hands with adults, smaller kids having tantrums, and crawling under the pews to get a crappy spearmint jellycandy from the middle-aged, closeted, single lesbian woman who sat two rows ahead. oh, peggy! if there was theatre that spoke to inclusion in lethbridge, maybe ole peggy would have abandoned the church and embraced herself long ago.

communion. yes. yay, cole!

". . . something that pricks my conscience every so often is how little I’m doing for the next generation of queer individuals growing up in the village of Duchess, AB – population 978."

It's too bad that so many queer youth have to leave rural Canada for more liberal-minded urban centres. It's bad for the communities that lose the people, and it's bad for the folks who feel they have to live away from "home" to have a full and decent life (not that I'm saying this was your position, just extrapolating on the trend).

There's a part of me that wonders how sustainable this rural community model is. Low-density, high energy consumption, low return on infrastructure investment, car culture, cultural vacuums – is this where rural Canada is headed? And if so, what's going to prevent it from going there if smart, young artists like yourself aren't sticking around to help with the sandbagging?

I can't say I blame you for leaving. Maybe it's a losing proposition. But it does raise some pretty scary questions about the future of our Country.
