Here is the AD of a theatre company that makes it their mandate to produce quality work that happens to be of colour. Here is a theatre company that puts their money where the mouth is and finds the financial and artistic resources in order to acknowledge that Asian-Canadian theatre IS relevent to Canada and when Fu-Gen produces on our stages, they’re not filling a quota and they’re not doing the “coloured people” people a favour-

They produce because they’re committed to Asian-Canadian stories being permanent fixtures in Canadian theatre and that it has just as much right to be here as the run-of-the-mill “Yay! We’re White!” plays we’re subjected to year after year.
The idea that we should pool all the “multiculturals” together into one theatrical mandate is exactly what is wrong with the state of race politics in Canadian theatre today.
