Three Canadian theatre research organizations, three mandates, three links:
Theatre Museum Canada
“Our objectives are:
- To collect and preserve artifacts to illustrate, interpret and make known the history of theatre in Canada;
- To produce outstanding and innovative programs and exhibitions;
- To use the highest ethical standards in all aspects of museum operations;
- To raise the resources needed to fulfill strategic objectives;
- To promote education, research and publication concerning theatre in Canada, and
- To inspire greater participation and achievement in live theatre in Canada.”
Canadian Theatre Encyclopedia
“The Encyclopedia of Canadian Theatre on the WWW was a project begun by Gaetan Charlebois, a theatre editor with Hour Magazine (Montreal), in 1993. The idea of the project is to keep an ongoing, highly accessible, database of information about Canadian actors, playwrights, directors, producers, designers, theatre organizations and institutions, composers and plays available to the world. The site will be continually under construction with information changing as résumés change, deaths occur and profiles rise.”
Canadian Association for Theatre Research
“The Canadian Association for Theatre Research is a non-profit organization founded in 1976 to support and encourage research in theatre and performance studies in Canada, with a special interest in Canadian work. Our membership includes scholars, students, and theatre professionals from around the world who are leading developments in our field.”
What can we do to make better use of these resources? Are there other national organizations dedicated to exploring and recording Canadian theatre history and theory?
I feel this is all right. But how do we actually get the cash?
